Yoga is an ancient practice that originated thousands of years ago in India.
It connects body, mind and soul through physical exercises, breathing techniques and meditation. Yoga helps you to relax, concentrate better and strengthen your muscles.

Yoga is ...

Goals of yoga:

  1. Physical health: through the practice of asanas (postures), the body is strengthened, flexibility is improved and general well-being is promoted. Yoga aims to bring the body into a state of health and vitality.

  2. Mental clarity: Yoga promotes concentration and mindfulness. Meditation and breathing exercises (pranayama) calm the mind and increase mental clarity.

  3. Emotional balance: Yoga helps to achieve emotional stability by teaching practitioners to detach themselves from negative emotions and find inner serenity.

  4. Spiritual growth: A central goal of yoga is to develop a deeper connection to oneself and to a higher consciousness. This leads to inner peace and a sense of oneness with the universe.

  5. Self-realisation: The ultimate goal of yoga is the attainment of moksha (liberation) or enlightenment, where the practitioner overcomes the illusion of separateness and realises the true nature of the self.

Principles of yoga:

  • Ahimsa (non-violence): Ahimsa is the principle of non-violence towards all living beings. This refers not only to physical violence, but also to thoughts and words.

  • Satya (Truthfulness): Satya means to be truthful in thought, word and deed. It demands honesty and integrity in all areas of life.

  • Asteya (non-stealing): This principle teaches not to take anything that does not belong to you and not to misuse the resources or ideas of others.

  • Brahmacharya (moderation): Brahmacharya is often understood as abstinence, but can also be interpreted as moderation in all things in order to maintain energy and not waste it.

  • Aparigraha (non-attachment): This principle emphasises the importance of not clinging to material things, people or thoughts, but to let go and focus on what is essential.

  • Saucha (purity): Saucha refers to the purification of the body and mind to lead a clear and healthy life.

  • Santosha (contentment): Santosha teaches acceptance of what is and the cultivation of inner peace and contentment, regardless of external circumstances.

  • Tapas (discipline): Tapas is the practice of self-discipline and inner heat that leads to transformation and purification.

  • Svadhyaya (self-study): Svadhyaya involves the study of sacred scriptures and continuous reflection on one's own life and behaviour.

  • Ishvara Pranidhana (Devotion to the Divine): This principle encourages devotion to a higher consciousness or God and trust that everything in life serves a higher purpose.

These goals and principles provide a foundation for a holistic way of life that harmonises body, mind and spirit and leads to a fulfilled and conscious life.
